Open-heart surgery is a complex and sophisticated procedure that can last anywhere from three to five hours and requires about a week's stay in the hospital. Unfortunately, through the years, open-heart surgery has typically been available only at larger teaching hospitals.

The demand for advanced heart care close to home has made way for the emergence of an open-heart surgery program at Danville Regional Medical Center. In 2003, the Heart Center of the Piedmont became a regional leader, providing the most comprehensive cardiac care to the Dan River Region of Virginia and North Carolina.
