Open Heart Surgery
Diseases of the heart continue to be a major health
concern for all, the leading cause of death in America,
and they continue to have a disproportonately high rate
of occurrence in the Piedmont. Open-heart surgery is
a complex and sophisticated procedure that can last
anywhere from three to five hours and requires about
a week's stay in the hospital. Unfortunately, through
the years, open-heart surgery has typically been available
only at larger teaching hospitals.
The demand for advanced heart care close to home has
made way for the emergence of an open-heart surgery
program at Danville Regional Medical Center. In 2003,
the Heart Center of the Piedmont
became a regional leader, providing the most comprehensive
cardiac care to the Dan River Region of Virginia and
North Carolina. Many people will live longer, vastly
improved lives due to the foresight of DRHS and to the
talented and caring staff of the Heart Center
of the Piedmont.
