Financial Aid Verification: The Financial Aid Officer conducts 100 percent verification of ALL financial aid applications for federal aid. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be completed to conduct verification and determine eligibility. You may complete the FAFSA at www.fafsa.edu.gov. Also, a copy of the base year’s income tax return and W-2 form are REQUIRED. Other documents may also be required depending on the individual situation. Financial aid checks will not be released to the student until verification is completed.
Financial Aid DRMC School of Health Professions students may be eligible for the following types of financial aid:
- Grant
Pell Grant Program – Eligibility is determined on the basis of financial need as determined by the U.S. Department of Education. No repayment required.
- Loans
Stafford Loan – These subsidized and unsubsidized loans are available to eligible students, partially based on need. Repayment begins 6 months after last day of attendance. Minimum payment of $50.00 per month. Can take up to 10 years to repay. Repayment is managed directly through the loan company.
In addition to completing a loan request form for a Stafford Loan, students must complete online entrance counseling and sign a Master Promissory Note (MPN). To complete this process, use this link.
Plus Loan - Parents of dependent students may take out a loan to cover Cost of Attendance minus other aid awarded. Use this link to begin the process.
Statement Regarding Preferred Lenders
To assist students and parents in choosing a lender, the Financial Aid Office offers a list of preferred lenders that provide good customer and competitive rates and benefits to our students. They also provide ease of processing with electronic payment of loan funds directly to the school, and meet with the financial aid office periodically to provide updates. The lender list, which is reviewed annually, is developed with these criteria in mind.
All borrowers have the right and ability to select the lender of their choice. Student or parents may choose a lender on the preferred lender list or choose another lender that participates in the Federal Stafford Loan program or Parent PLUS Loan program.
Loan Resale Disclosure
No lenders on the school’s preferred lender list sell their loans without disclosing the fact. If the loan is sold, the sale will not result in any change of benefits or loan terms. If students choose to consolidate loans, loan terms and advertised borrower benefits may change.
- Scholarships
Health Focus of Southwest Virginia - Awarded to students who demonstrate a need and are approved by the Health Focus of Southwest Virginia Scholarship committee. If the program is not completed, repayment is required. Repayment is managed through Health Focus of Southwest Virginia.
- Other – The School is approved for participation in programs such as Workforce Investment, Trade Act, and Veterans’ Benefits when students eligible for such programs are accepted by the School. Any repayment is managed through the individual agency.
Financial Aid Nursing Program students may be eligible for the following type of financial aid (in addition to the ones listed above):
Scholarship
Mary Marshall Scholarship – A General Assembly & Board of Nursing scholarship awarded to Virginia students based on GPA and need. This scholarship requires the recipients to work in the state of Virginia for a period of time after graduation and licensure. Repayment is required if not working in Virginia. Repayment is managed through Mary Marshall Scholarship.
Miscellaneous Assistance
Student Nursing Assistance Program (SNAP) – This program pays the entire two years of tuition cost for recipients. The recipients are chosen at the discretion of the Student Loan Committee based on the following criteria: greatest financial need, greatest chance to succeed in the nursing program; and the greatest possibility of accepting a RN position at DRMC. A contract must be signed to work off the balance at DRMC. If the graduate does not work as a RN at DRMC, the recipient must repay the balance with interest as stated in the contract.
