THINK
FIRST for KIDS
THINK
FIRST for KIDS is presented in a classroom
format. The curriculum is designed for grades 1 through
3 and has a separate curriculum for each grade level.
The program is designed to educate students on activities
that place them at risk of obtaining a brain or spinal
cord injury. The program consists of a 12-minute animated
video where the students meet "Street Smart," character
who practices safe behaviors and five comic strips depicting
"Street Smart" in safety-related scenarios. The five
components of THINK FIRST for KIDS are:
| Vehicular Safety: |
Students learn the importance
of using safety belts and how to behave in a vehicle.
The concept of the "danger zone" surrounding school
buses is introduced, along with aspects of pedestrian
safety. |
| Bicycle Safety: |
Students learn the importance
of obeying traffic rules. The value of protective
helmets, reflectors, and other safety equipment
is emphasized. |
| Recreational Safety: |
The appropriate uses of playground
equipment, courteous play, use of protective gear
and street safety are emphasized. |
| Water Safety: |
Students are taught diving
precautions and safe behaviors around pools, lakes
and other bodies of water. |
| Safety around Weapons: |
Personal safety around
weapons and creative problem-solving are detailed
in this lesson.
