Happy Heart Healthy Birthday to Heart Center

from Better Health magazine, Winter, 2005

The Heart Center of the Piedmont is celebrating its second anniversary of service to the Dan River Region. And it has been two very rewarding and successful years.

"We've performed more than 250 open heart procedures," said Kathy Dalton, Director of Surgical Services, "and I believe that's evidence of how well we've been received by the community." Another measure of the Center's outstanding work is that its rate of complications in coronary artery by pass surgery is less than four percent - compared to almost 14 percent for other hospitals in the region.

What shouldn't be overlooked as this milestone is recognized is the amazing amount of work done by the many talented people who are part of the Heart Center. "This Center was started from the ground up," said Dalton. "We've brought in professionals who aren't just skilled and experienced, but who care about people. They truly are the ones who are the backbone of this program."

As the anniversary milestone is reached, two physicians for Duke University Medical Center are handling surgical duties in the Heart Center, and our patients are benefiting from their extensive experience.

"The relationship between Danville Regional and Duke has been a positive one," said Sinan A. Simsir, MD, Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon at Duke University Medical Center. "We worked together to create a program that would serve the people of the Dan River Region. They can be justly proud that the Heart Center of the Piedmont continues to perform up to Duke's high standards of quality."

Shu S. Lin, MD, PhD, Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon, agreed with his colleague. "For coronary bypass and valve operations, Danville Regional is an excellent destination," he said. "It's important that we've had two very successful years, but it's even more important that we've provided care that's on a par with the best national benchmarks."
