Message from the President
from Better Health magazine, Winter, 2005
This is National Heart Month, an appropriate occasion
to reflect on the impact the Heart Center of the Piedmont
has had on our community.
In
some ways it seems like just yesterday that all our
planning and preparation resulted in the first open-heart
surgery to be performed in Danville. And yet, as we
continue weekly meetings to evaluate our progress, and
as we get reports on every patient we treat, this commitment
continues to be one of our top ongoing priorities.
One of the most gratifying outcomes regarding the Heart
Center has been the outstanding partnership we have
enjoyed with Duke University Health System. Our affiliation
has ensured the resources and support necessary to provide
the highest level of care to our patients.
Be sure to read the story in this issue about the BRAVO
technology for diagnosing reflux disease. It is part
of our continuing effort to bring new technologies that
improve the health and comfort of our patients. This
system was endorsed by all of our gastroenterologists,
and their support has been invaluable.
Finally, the DRMC campus will become entirely smoke
free on July 1 of this year. The reasons for this change
are self-evident for a hospital that takes seriously
its mission to the community. We understand that some
people will have to adjust to the new policy, but the
health of our patients, staff, and visitors is worth
any temporary inconvenience. I applaud our medical staff
for their unanimous decision to endorse this change,
and we believe our campus will be a healthier and safer
place as a result.
Sincerely,

B. R. Ashby, MD
