Parents: Get an "A" in back-to-school health
from Better Health magazine, Summer,
2005
Here's a checklist for
parents and students to make sure this school year is
your healthiest ever.
Immunization:
Virginia law states that all required immunizations
must be completed and that the records be at the school
before students are permitted to enroll. Immunization
is crucial for your child's health - check with your
pediatrician to make sure your child is caught up.

Nutrition:
"Research shows that on the whole, school lunches
are more nutritious than those brought from home."
said Sherri Wright, School Health Facilitator for Danville
Public Schools. "If you prefer to pack lunches,
be sure to include proteins, fruits and vegetables,
and whole grains."
Exercise:
"Children should receive at least an hour of exercise
every single day," said Wright. "And TV should
be kept at a maximum of two hours a day."
Colds:
"Washing your hands is so important," said
Kyla Berreth, DO, at Danville Regional Children's Healthcare
Center."Wash before eating, wash after using the
bathroom, and wash as soon as possible after coughing
or sneezing. I tell kids to sing 'Happy Birthday' in
their minds - that gives them a good idea of how long
to scrub. Of course, don't share cups, lipsticks, or
lip balm." Dr. Berreth also says that children
should be kept out of school when they have a fever.
"That's when they are most contagious," she
said.
