Heart Center of the Piedmont welcomes new open-heart
surgeon
from Better Health magazine, Summer,
2005
The Heart Center of
the Piedmont has made a significant impact on the Dan
River Region. That influence continues to grow with
the announcement of our new open-heart surgeon, Ulysses
G. (Lee) McCann II, MD. Dr.
McCann comes to us from Houston, where he held a fellowship
in cardiothoracic surgery at the Michael E. DeBakey
Department of Surgery of the Baylor College of Medicine.
"I'm impressed with the progress the Heart Center
of the Piedmont has made in such a short time,"
Dr. McCann said. "One of the reasons I chose to
accept this opportunity is the unlimited potential for
additional growth and development the Open Heart Program
offers."
Cardiothoracic surgeons must undergo extensive training
in order to be prepared for the crucial task of heart
surgery. Dr. McCann graduated from medical school at
the University of Texas Health Science Center, and did
his internship and residency at University Hospital
- Syracuse, where he was Surgical Research Fellow 1998-2000.
During the interim period before Dr. McCann joined
us, we were fortunate to have the assistance of Shu
S. Lin, MD, PhD, and Sinan M. Simsir, MD. With two cardiovascular
surgeons from Duke University Medical Center on hand,
patients were extremely well served.
"Our experience at Danville Regional Medical Center
has been fantastic," said Dr. Lin. "This is
due to the wonderful, caring people who make up the
Open Heart Surgery Team, the experienced Cardiologists,
the Cath Lab personnel, and the Intensive Care Unit
nursing staff. We worked extremely well as a team toward
the common goal of providing excellent care for our
patients. Dr. Lee McCann is very fortunate to have these
people working with him as he begins a new, exciting
phase of his career."
Dr. McCann, who has also joined the faculty of Duke
University, says "My wife and I both grew up in
small cities, and we were looking to raise our family
in that same kind of environmnet, which Danville offers.
We are all excited to be here."
