New image-guided system meets standard of care for
delicate surgery
from Better Health magazine, Spring, 2005
Perhaps
no segment of medical technology changes as rapidly
as imaging. Through its recent acquisition of a new
image-guided system, Danville Regional has now made
significant strides in achieving and maintaining the
standard of care in neurosurgery.
Regular
x-rays provide only one angle of an image. Previous
equipment often required extra steps, and extra time
-patient time, physician time, and operating room time.
"Our new Medtronic system allows physicians to see 3-D
images and locate the exact position of tumors or other
abnormalities," said Jon Carter, operating room business
coordinator. "And it does it all in one step, so it's
much more efficient."
"Image-guided
systems are not new to Danville Regional, but the latest
upgrade in our system will go a long way towards physician
proficiency which translates into better and safer outcomes
for patients. Danville Regional has a long history of
providing its physicians the equipment and upgrades
necessary to keep our patients safe. As physicians we
appreciate the opportunity to practice state-of-the-art
medicine and surgery'' said Joel M. Singer, MD, PhD,
Southside Neurosurgical Associates, PC.
"This
technology gives us much greater flexibility due to
the functionality of its software and it provides our
surgeons with much more visualization than they had
before,'' said Carter "We can use it not only to
pinpoint tumors, but in procedures such as biopsies,
shunt placements, and 5-D renderings of blood vessels.
This technology will not only improve our accuracy today,
but promises to be equally valuable for years to come."
