Coaches Answer: When Should Your Child Start Playing Football?

from Better Health magazine, Summer, 2004

We asked area high school head football coaches what they considered the proper time to begin football. Their answers were surprisingly consistent.

Matt Foutz, coach of Chatham High School, thinks age 10 is appropriate but "I leave it up to parents."

"I don't think there's any specific age," Bartlett Yancey High coach Ken Meadors said. "Probably somewhere around age 10. What's more important is that coaches teach them proper fundamentals and technique."

Coaching is also the key for coach Dan Newell of George Washington High School. "If they have proper coaching, I think they're okay starting young," he said. "Have you looked at those little kids? They have on so much equipment, there's hardly any part of them sticking out to get hurt. They look like gladiators. Proper hydration, nutrition - make sure your child's coach puts enough emphasis on these things.
