Is Your Family Ready for the Fall Sports Season? Our Sports Medicine Doctors Are.

from Better Health magazine, Summer, 2004

Dr. Krome comes to Danville
Autumn means touchdown passes. Fast breaks. And jump serves. It can also mean shoulder pain. Sprained ankles. And twisted knees.

Fortunately, the Dan River Region is served by many outstanding orthopedists who have the talent and expertise to get athletes back in the game. And this year a physician new to our area, Jonathan Krome, MD, has joined the staff of Danville Orthopedic Clinic.

Dr. Krome comes to Danville from Rome, Georgia where he served as team physician for a variety of high school and professional sports. Prominent among these was the Rome Braves, a Class A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves and the defending champion of the South Atlantic League. He gained valuable experience by serving on the team's medical staff.

"Although I thoroughly enjoyed working with the Braves, I think football offers the most challenges for a sports orthopedist, " Dr. Krome said. "The contact, the abrupt starts and stops, all give us a wide variety of conditions to treat."

Dr. Krome says joints take the most punishment in active sports. "We can now perform arthroscopic surgery on injuries that required major surgery not that many years ago," he said. He notes that knees take punishment in football and soccer, and shoulders are often affected in baseball, softball, and volleyball. "Surgery, when done by qualified professionals, can often save and extend an athlete's career."

For school sports, the team trainer is the first level of care for injuries. Their training helps them distinguish minor injuries that may require only ice and physical therapy from those which need x-rays, and possibly, surgery.

"A good trainer is extremely valuable," Dr. Krome said. "Team trainers are with the athletes for hours every day, treating minor problems and helping with rehab."

Dr. Krome, who completed a fellowship in sports medicine at The Hughston Sports Medicine Foundation in Columbus, Georgia, is pleased with the surgical facilities he's found at Danville Regional Medical Center. "In sports, we often hear commentators talk about players 'taking their game to the next level.' That's what the hospital is doing with orthopedic surgery. And with the experienced orthopedists practicing in this area, there are very few orthopedic surgeries we can't perform right here at Danville Regional.
