Education and Intervention Help Prevent High Blood Pressure

from Better Health magazine, Spring, 2004

The facts about hypertension are sobering. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, affects one of every five Americans. It's one of the primary causes of strokes, and can also seriously damage your heart, eyes, and kidneys. Hypertension and its complications such as heart attack and stroke are much too common in the Dan River Region. That's why Danville Regional is committed to getting the facts about prevention into the community. Through our Family Healthcare Centers in Danville and Gretna, our Hypertension Clinic, and the Dan River Region Cardiovascular Health Initiative Program (DRchip), we're providing cardiovascular screenings, referral, treatment and follow-up.

DRchip is a volunteer, non-profit health organization that is supported by Danville Regional Health System, Danville Regional Health Foundation, Danville-Pittsylvania County Health Department, and the Consortium of Southeastern Hypertension Control. It provides community screening and education for cardiovascular disease. One of its founders, Michael A. Moore, MD, received the American Heart Association's (AHA) prestigious 2004 'Physician of the Year' award. Once a year the AHA bestows this award, nationally, ons one physician who has rendered outstanding contributions in reducing disability and death from cardiovascular disease and stroke. Dr. Moore manages the Hypertension Clinic within Family Healthcare Center of Danville.

"At Danville Regional Medical Center, with the Family Healthcare Hypertension Clinic providing primary prevention, and the Open Heart Surgery Program providing secondary prevention, we're treating patients with hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases, but we're also educating them and empowering them to gain control of their own health."

The Board of Directors, administration and associates of Danville Regional wish to thank and congratulate Dr. Moore in providing service excellence to our community. If you have any question about hypertension, or would like to make an appointment for a hypertension evaluation, call Family Healthcare Center of Danville at (434) 797-2828.
