A Message from our President
from Better Health magazine, Spring,
2004
The Annual Report to the Community Issue of Better
Health gives me the opportunity to reflect on all we
accomplished the previous year. The opening of the new
Heart Center of the Piedmont dominated the news around
here last year. And yet, a theme that runs through my
recollections of 2003 is one of all the positive things
said about our organization from those who have had
cause to study it.
The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care
Organizations, for example, was very complimentary of
our emphasis on patient safety, as was the General Accounting
Office, which visited our hospital specifically to see
how we use technology to improve patient care.
Danville Regional's Medical Education Program, headed
by Dr. Michael Moore, was accredited by the Virginia
Medical Society and awarded commendation in four of
ten categories. That's a remarkable accomplishment,
and speaks volumes about the quality of the program.
And our staff put their money where their mouths are
in 2003, with outstanding participation in such community
health activities as the Relay for Life and the American
Heart Walk. We also had an exemplary year of giving
to the United Way, helping the many worthwhile community
organizations that it supports.
The accomplishments of last year are the prologue to
our plans for 2004. We are continuing to upgrade our
clinical technology, including the purchase of two new
MRI machines. We're also looking for every way possible
to use technology to improve patient care and safety.
Finally, we've just renamed our "A" Building
as the Landon R. Wyatt, Jr. Tower. It's a fitting name
to honor a man who served as the chairman of the board
of our health system for 24 years, and who stands tall
as one of the great leaders in the history of our organization.
Sincerely,

Warren E. Callaway, FACHE
President and Chief Executive Officer
Danville Regional Health System
