Your image is twice as good these days.

imaging at DRHSTo accurately diagnose many illnesses or injuries, sometimes you have to see what is on the inside and take a picture. In the past, this picture has been called an x-ray, which primarily looked at broken bones. Through advancements in technology, the term x-ray and its uses have evolved into what is more commonly referred to as imaging. Seeing what is on the inside is what imaging is all about and Danville Regional Health System offers the region two choices for these important services close to home. Both the Danville Regional Diagnostic Imaging Center (DRDIC) and Danville Regional Medical Center offer mammography, ultrasound, fluoroscopy imaging, routine x-rays, CT and MRI scans, and nuclear medicine.

imaging in Southside Virginia graphic"One of the things that sets us apart is the availability of an open MRI," said Debra Parrish, VSRT, Director of the DRDIC. "Many patients feel more comfortable without the machine surrounding their body during this procedure. The open MRI at DRDIC is the only one in Southside Virginia, and we had it before Greensboro, Roanoke, or Lynchburg. As a result, we see patients from throughout the region. "

Another brand new technology now available at DRDIC is a multi-slice CT scanner. "This equipment provides vascular scans that are accurate and quick," said Parrish. "It's one of our most rapidly growing services, and nicely complements the addition of the Heart Center of the Piedmont."

Danville Regional Medical Center also features new technology, according to Gerald Johnson, PhD, RTR. "We now have a dual-head camera system to scan the heart, providing information rapidly and with less discomfort to patients. We can determine blood flow and heart function in precise multi-dimensional images."

The PET scanner works by injecting a sugar compound into the patient along with a small dose of radioactive chemical. When a tumor is present, the scan provides a color-coded, intense image that helps physicians determine the proper course of treatment.

Residents of the Dan River Region are fortunate to have such cutting-edge imaging services available close to home. With two convenient locations, Danville Regional Health System has you covered - from head to toe.
