What You Need to Know About Osteoporosis |
Osteoporosis
is the loss of bone density that accompanies aging.
This process leads to brittle bones and an increased
risk of fractures. The greater the bone loss, the higher
the risk of fracture. More than 1.3 million fractures
due to osteoporosis occur each year. A significant proportion
of those hospitalized for hip fractures will die from
their injury due to complications
Despite these frightening statistics, we can prevent
a vast majority of hip fractures by screening and treating
patients at risk. Post menopausal women lose bone density
rapidly in the years after menopause and should be screened
when their periods cease. Men are also at risk, especially
those who smoke, drink alcohol, or are taking steroid
medication, such as prednisone.
The
screening test for osteoporosis is quick and painless
and involves a special X-ray machine. If a patient is
shown to have low bone density, there are several treatment
options, including calcium and vitamin D supplementation,
hormone therapy for post menopausal women, and newer
medicines, such as Actonel and Fosamax. These treatments
are quite effective and an increase in bone density
of just 10% leads to a 50% increase in fracture risk.
I urge you to talk to your doctor about screening and
treatment options, and together we can stop bone loss
before it happens.
