When it comes to choosing homes to break into, burglars typically select ones that look like easy targets. To help ensure that your home isn't one of then, take these precautions:
When you move into a home, be sure to change all of the locks.
Use sturdy dead bolt locks on all external doors.
Replace glass panels on or around entry doors with laminated glass,
which is harder to break.
Don't hide keys around the outside of your home. Instead, give an
extra key to a friend or trustworthy neighbor.
Consider adopting or buying a dog.
Trim any shrubbery that a burglar might use as a hiding place.
Place outdoor lighting out of reach so bulbs can't be removed or
broken from the ground.
Install exterior lights with infrared sensors that switch on when
motion is detected.
If you leave home, create the illusion that your home is occupied.
For example, use timers to turn selected lights on and off at irregular
intervals. Before going on vacation, stop newspaper and mail delivery,
and arrange to have the lawn mowed regularly.
