button  A study of measures that could help prevent type 2 diabetes was stopped a year early. Why? Because healthy habits had already been proven far superior to an oral diabetes drug. Participants were overweight and had impaired glucose tolerance, which often leads to diabetes. Those who ate a low-fat diet and exercised 150 minutes weekly cut their risk of getting diabetes by 58%. Weight loss was a big part of the reason. They lost an average of 5 to 7% of their body weight. Those who took the medication lowered their risk of diabetes by 31%.
