Who Should Have a Mammogram?
from Better Health magazine, Spring, 2002

mammogram graphicThe American Cancer Society now recommends that all women have a screening mammogram every year once they turn 40. You can schedule a mammogram with or without a physician referral. We'll give you the results of your mammogram quickly and if necessary, additional procedures can often be scheduled the same day.

Mammography is a low-level x-ray of the breasts that can detect cancer at its earliest stage. It can also show other changes in the breast that doctors believe may suggest cancer. Early detection of breast cancer can be key to preventing premature death from this disease. The cost of mammography services is covered by Medicaid and Medicare and most insurance programs.
