Leslie Smith, a social worker at Danville Regional Medical Center, was named "Legend of the Year" for 2000 by the associates and administrators of Danville Regional Health System.

Ms. Smith was selected for her outstanding efforts in going above and beyond the call of duty to help patients and fellow associates alike. In just one of the many instances cited by the selection committee, Ms. Smith took it upon herself to obtain a crib, diapers and formula for a new mother in the obstetrics unit who did not have bedding at home for the child.

Ms. Smith also serves on the Associate Emergency Relief Fund Committee, where she helps associates in times of unexpected need. On numerous occasions, coworkers have benefitted from her off-duty trips to stores to purchase clothing and items necessary to meet basic needs. Last Christmas, she even went out on Christmas Eve to purchase gifts for children in the hospital whom she knew would not be receiving gifts.

For these efforts - and the countless others which have gone unseen - Leslie Smith is truly a "legend." We hope the community will join us in thanking her for her unselfish devotion to serving others.
