A Step Closer to Cure
from Better Health magazine,Summer, 2000
For the third year in a row, Danville Regional Health System
helped make Relay for Life, the American Cancer Society's largest fundraising event, a bigger success than ever in Danville. More than 400 walkers participated in the 24-hour relay that not only helped to raise $75,000 for research and prevention but also celebrated survivors and honored those who have been lost in the fight against cancer.
On the evening of June 2 at J. M. Langston Focus School Football Field, the event began with over 100 cancer survivors walking the first lap arm-in-arm, their caregivers following close behind. During a ceremony later that night, over 1500 luminaries were lit in memory of those who have lost the fight against cancer and in honor of those who have survived.
As a sponsor, Danville Regional Health System played a large role in the event. "Of the 28 participating teams, nine were represented by our associates," said Kay Crane, Community and Media Relations Coordinator for Danville Regional Health System. "We also raised $23,894.25, which was nearly a third of the total."
Of the total funds raised, 42 percent will be returned to the community in the form of patient education, patient services, and cancer detection and prevention programs. Research will be funded by 36.2 percent, 17.8 percent will go toward fundraising activities, and only 4 percent will be designated for management.
